At the moment, there’s a bill in Congress proposing a $10 entry fee for visitors into the United States. It’s part of the Travel Promotion Act of 2009 and the $10 fee would be assessed on any visitor and the proceeds would be used to promote tourism. That’s right, tourists would be, in part, paying for the marketing, advertising, and other promotional efforts of tourism to the United States!
I first read about this at Gadling and I agree with their assessment of it – it’s completely insane. I also agree that if the United States were to implement this, other nations would do the same for Americans visiting them. While it’s only $10, the whole idea of it just seems a little silly.
