Southern Germany – Our Game Plan

August 17th · 2 Comments

Whenever you pick up a travel book about Germany it always has one picture on the cover of either: Mad King Ludwig’s castle, the Hofbrau Haus in Munich or idyllic Rothenberg ob der Tauber. We couldn’t have visited Germany and missed any of these famous sights!

Staying in Stuttgart

We have family friends in Stuttgart so we decided to make that our home base to see the many sights in southern Germany. After traveling to Stuttgart via the dining car we were greeted at the train platform by our friends, Bud and Anne. We stayed in Stuttgart from Friday through Tuesday.

Bud & Anne in Rothenburg

Our first two days in Stuttgart were over the weekend so Bud, Anne, Jim and I all traveled to Füssen on Saturday and Rothenberg ob der Tauber on Sunday. Füssen is the location of Neuschwanstein, or Mad King Ludwig’s castle. It is also home to Hohenschwangau where King Ludwig grew up.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the few remaining walled cities in Germany. It has retained its medieval look and is located on the Romantic Road between Frankfurt and Munich. It is a great place to visit to learn more about medieval Germany and to enjoy a beautiful town.

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, the southern most state in Germany. Munich is the third largest city in Germany after Berlin and Hamburg. It is a great city to visit which includes the Hofbrauhaus, a famous beergarden, the Deutsches Museum, Nymphenburg palace, Viktualienmarkt, and Christkindlmarkt.

Even though traveling to Füssen, Rothenburg and then Munich would be a busy three days we decided that we couldn’t miss any of these famous sights!

Busy, busy! I think Rothenburg was one of our favorite spots in Germany. A fantastic city.

We stayed in Munich about a week – a bit too long but there were a lot of relatives there. Very nice city.

We drove to Neuschwanstein but our 2 month old was screaming her head off so we decided against making the bus trip up to the castle. Traveling before having kids is a great idea! 🙂

Yeah, Rothenburg was a lot of fun to walk around. We tried to stay up and take the night watchman’s tour but we were way too tired. Our friends Bud & Anne had the DVD of the tour and we watched it the next day… only to fall asleep hahaha.
