The first stop on our European Adventure 2009 trip was sunny England, specifically the Chiswick area of London. We had just attended a beautiful wedding in Mystic, Connecticut and so we needed some recovery time from so many flights.
Trekking from Mystic to Chiswick
We flew out of Boston’s Logan airport after taking an Amtrak train from Connecticut. The train itself was great, getting us to a station just a stone’s throw away from the airport on the Silver Line (bus). From there, we checked in, sat on a Virgin Atlantic plane for five and a half hours and found ourselves in England!
We were beat.
Upon landing, we hopped onto the Piccadilly line of the Underground and then transferred to the District line to get to the Turnham Green stop where our friend was living. From there, it was, fortunately, a five minute walk to her apartment.
I think one of the most important things you can do whenever you go on long trips is to schedule a “recovery day.” We had to contend with a nearly six hour plane ride, a five hour time difference, and lugging our luggage around – so using the remainder of the day for rest was crucial.
While it would take a few more days to adjust, we would’ve stood zero chance of doing anything we had planned (if we planned to go somewhere). All we succeeded in doing was eat lunch at a Thai restaurant (a place we had gone to last time we were in England) and sleeping a little.
