How to Find a Cheap Flight

February 19th, 2010 · No Comments

Matt Gross, Frugal Traveler on the New York Times, published a very educational article this week on how to find a cheap flight. As a relatively frequent traveler, I thought I knew many, thought not all, the tricks in the trade but I see that Matt clearly has me beat. While we start with the same engine, Kayak.com, he takes it a few steps further by using a few other resources including ITASoftware.com and cFares.com.

One trick that he didn’t mention was looking up codeshares. Almost every flight an airline flies will also be available to its codesharing partners, sometimes at a discount. For example, Delta is codeshare partners with Alaska Airlines, American Eagle, China Airlines, and Royal Air Maroc. You can sometimes get the same flight for less if you book with a codeshare partner, but it requires a little of sleuthing on a site like FlightStats.com.
