First Day in Dublin, Ireland

August 3rd · 1 Comment

The events in this post occurred on July 23rd, 2009.

After our pleasant Ryan Air flight from London Luton to Dublin, we hopped on a bus to get us to the Burlington Hotel. The airport is to the north of the city center and our hotel was to the south, so it took about an hour and a half to make our way through.

Burlington Hotel

The Burlington was a great place to stay. The concierge, Edward, was extremely helpful in explaining how we could get around the city and where we needed to go.

The rooms were nice, nothing notable, and there was free wi-fi, which made researching our plans very easy. The best part about the hotel was the lobby, which was wide open and had plenty of seating. The lobby also doubled as seating for the coffeehouse during the day so the seats were very comfortable.

Our first night, we bought a bottle of port, a few pints, and some wine to enjoy while we played several rousing games of Settlers of Catan:

Travel Around Dublin

Travel by bus was great around Dublin. We hopped on a bus to the city center and bought unlimited ride vouchers from a Spar, a chain-convenience store. While it ultimately didn’t prove to be “worth it” from a cost perspective, it was more convenient using a card like that than to fish out the change you need for the bus (they don’t give change on the bus).

Summary of Our First Day

The first day, we hit up the Guinness Storehouse Tour (post to come later), ate at the Brazen Head Inn (post to come later) wandered around Grafton Street (nothing notable, just a bunch of contemporary stores), and played board games in the lobby of the hotel to round out the night.

We’ll have full posts about the tour and the Inn this afternoon and tomorrow.

Your choice of accommodation for Dublin was good – I used to be a Manager at this Hotel back in the eighties! I understand that some of your other accommodations were a bit of a disappointment.
It seems like you had a quick busy visit to Dublin.
Hope to see you back in Dublin again sometime.
